On Thursday evening, the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, witnessed the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding in this regard between the competent authorities in Egypt and a Finnish specialized company.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and the Alexandria Arsenal Company, which specializes in the shipbuilding and repair industry, and a development company for consulting and engineering services specialized in cooperation with power station construction companies, in cooperation with the Finnish company Delta Marine, which specializes in ship design and preparation of initial studies. and feasibility study.
The memorandum of understanding includes the start of evaluating and discussing the initial study and feasibility study for modifying ships and establishing a power station on self-propelled ships for an electric power ship with a capacity of (100 to 125 megawatts), according to the Ministry of Electricity.
The ministry said that this project is the first of its kind to be implemented in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in order to speed up the supply of electrical power in the event of faults, whether internal or external.
A spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity, Ayman Hamza, said in a statement to “Sky News Arabia” that the study will be conducted to assess the possibility of modifying one of the ships to work as a floating power plant through gas or diesel turbines.
He explained that resorting to this type of station aims to deal with emergency malfunctions in any coastal city or close to the coasts on the Mediterranean, unlike floating wind stations where the generation turbines are fixed and difficult to move.
He pointed out that the feasibility study will include everything in terms of time, implementation plan and cost in preparation for submission to the government before signing a final agreement on modifying the ship and implementing the generation turbines.
