Former governor goes back and says that he will be the name of the PSDB in the elections for Palácio Piratini; resigned in March
The former governor of Rio Grande do Sul Eduardo Leite (PSDB-RS) announced this Monday (13.jun.2022) that it is a pre-candidate for the state government once again. He made the statement alongside the current governor, Ranolfo Vieira Júnior, in an interview with journalists at the party’s state directory, in Porto Alegre.
In note (intact – 132KB), Leite said that the decision was made by the party. “I started to mature the possibility of running for a new term in January of this year, from conversations that showed the difficulty of keeping our base together around another candidacy. The press itself reported appeals from political, social and business leaders asking me to reconsider my decision not to run for reelection”.
On March 31, the former governor made official his departure from the government of RS. In his speech, Leite said that it was a “hard decision” and posed as a “representative of a nation”.
Leite was overtaken by the former governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), in the toucans’ previews for the Planalto in November last year. After that, he began to give indications that he could run for president by the PSD. However, after an appeal by PSDB representatives, he decided to remain in the acronym.
Since the preliminaries, the gaucho has been at the center of internal disputes in the PSDB. The imbroglio resulted in Doria withdrawing from the pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, in May. Party leaders wanted to remove Doria’s name from the race for the Plateau so that the acronym could support a single candidacy of the so-called 3rd way.
Last week, the PSDB made official its support for the senator’s pre-candidacy Simone Tebet (MDB-MS). The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Executive of the party. There were 39 votes in favor of the alliance, 6 against and one abstention. The vice vacancy in Tebet’s ticket will be a member of the tucana acronym.
