Coronavirus pandemic escalating every day is a reminder of the importance of extensive preparedness. Precaution is precisely the bread of the Defense Forces, but now it is facing the same problems as the rest of society in the midst of the fourth wave of the pandemic. At the same time, the Defense Forces also have a problem due to over-preparedness.
The Defense Forces have wondered at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health’s (STM) request for preparedness last week. The ministry asked the Defense Forces to prepare for the two-month workload of about 5,000 people. Defense Forces however, has not received a single request for assistance municipalities or hospital districts.
In the midst of a crisis like a pandemic, the resources of the defense forces must also be able to be used to support civil society, but requests for official assistance must be appropriate. One can now ask what STM’s assessment of the municipalities’ need for assistance was ultimately based on.
It is good for the Defense Forces that there have been no requests for help, as the garrisons are fully employed to take care of their own coronary virus patients. The medical staff is attached to treating the sick conscripts.
In January the start-up period for beginners is spent in many garrisons largely ill or in corona quarantine. Some of the patients have been sent home right at the beginning of the service. Attempts are being made to protect those who are still healthy and have avoided exposure by immediately placing the newcomers in barracks, camping and camping. Training is provided outdoors to minimize infections.
The readiness of the Defense Forces is based on the ability to anticipate situations. Attempts should have been made to prevent the filling of hospital wards by ensuring that those who start military service have time to be vaccinated before the service begins. Now many conscripts began service without vaccination.
Although vaccinations do not prevent all infections or infectivity, they are the only way out of the epidemic. The Defense Forces must be able to require coronation vaccinations for those entering the service.
