Enhancing eel protection is necessary, as the species is on the verge of extinction. The preservation of many other endangered species also requires international restrictions. There are also endangered birds among the game species in Finland.
To the eel sedation is enhanced. Fishing for the extremely endangered species is prohibited for the whole year, except for July. The fishing ban covers the periods of the eel’s biggest migration.
The State Council has confirmed the amendment to the regulation, where the cooling-off period is longer than the EU regulation requires. It is necessary to intensify the relaxation, because the mid-winter relaxation period that was previously valid in Finland is not enough to secure the eel’s spawning migration.
The eel is a mysterious creature. The life cycle of the snake-like fish is long, 25–30 years. In order to reproduce, the eel swims more than 6,000 kilometers to the northwestern part of the Atlantic to the Sargasso Sea, where all eels are believed to reproduce. During the hiking trip, the eel does not eat anything, but before the hike, it refuels itself and accumulates energy. This is also the fate of the eel, because fatty fish is a delicacy for many. After leaving Finland, the eel would have to clear a long journey across the Baltic Sea to the ocean, behind a large fishing area.
The eel population has collapsed throughout Europe, and the extremely endangered species is in danger of disappearing completely, becoming extinct.
The new regulation allows eel fishing in July, which is not a significant migration period. Eels have been planted in abundance, and in Finland almost all eels caught come from plantations.
Saving the eel requires political decisions. Expanding sedation is one way to save the species. The next step to save the eel’s life cycle would be complete sedation. Securing the hiking connection is also necessary.
In Finland, the eel’s plight is shared by approximately 2,670 species. Every ninth species is endangered. They are threatened by the reduction and deterioration of habitats, but also by hunting and fishing. For example, there are still endangered species among game birds.
The preservation of many endangered species requires international cooperation. It is also worth considering whether there is any point in fishing or hunting endangered species.
