According to the president, the director general of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, gave a negative assessment to the Brazilian economy for 2024
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Tuesday (April 23, 2024) that the Brazilian economy will grow more than economic analysts' projections.
According to Lula, the general director of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), Kristalina Georgieva, projected a result for Brazil's GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2024 below what she expects. The IMF expects Brazil to grow 2.2% this year and 2.1% in 2025. The president criticized the economist's expectations and said it would be wrong.
“It's her [Kristalina Georgieva] made another negative assessment for 2024. I told her she would be wrong again. Because the Brazilian economy will grow more than all the so-called economic analysts have said so far. And why will it grow? [Porque] Things are happening in Brazil”declared Lula during breakfast with journalists this Tuesday (April 23, 2024).
Lula stated that Georgieva would also have projected a modest GDP result in 2023, but would have been wrong. Last year, the Brazilian economy grew 2.9%, while the International Monetary Fund was betting on a 1.2% increase at the end of January 2023. This Tuesday (April 23), the Focus Bulletin, from the BC (Bank Central), projected index growth of more than 2%.
On February 29th, Georgieva said that Brazil has been a “good news” for the world economy for having stood out in growth projections. The economist stated that Brazil has a “advantage” on ecological issues, which ensures “new opportunities” for industries.
