According to the forecasts of the World Tourism Organization, the activity could register a growth of 2% this year above what was reported in 2019, prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, the same Organization foresees a total recovery in Latin America, which continues to position itself in the international market.
According to the most recent report from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the international tourism industry will recover the levels recorded before the pandemic in 2024, and initial projections point to a growth of 2% compared to 2019 indices.
Already at the end of 2023, the industry had reached 90% recovery, registering 975 million international tourists between January and September of that year, an increase of 38% compared to the same period in 2022. In this way, income was around 1.4 trillion dollars.
Meanwhile, the World Tourism Organization reported that the contributions made by the activity in economic terms, measured in the direct Gross Domestic Product of tourism, reached 3.3 trillion dollars in 2023, that is, 3% of world GDP.
Both the UNWTO and some tourism experts predict that economic challenges such as high inflation and weak global production, geopolitical tensions and conflicts, will position regions such as Latin America during this year, which seeks to adapt to the trends that challenge the industry.
Brazil and Mexico, according to Statista Market Insights, will continue to lead this year as the most chosen destinations, and a 13% increase in travel and tourism market income is anticipated for the entire region.
In 2023, the congress and conference industry alone in Mexico achieved revenues of over $10 billion, with Cancun, Mexico City and Guadalajara being the destinations that attracted the most events.
Meanwhile, countries suffering the consequences of economic crises, such as Argentina and Cuba, also expect high income from the international tourism industry.
Cuba aims to reach three million tourists during 2024, despite the slow recovery of the sector after the pandemic, according to the island's Government.
Meanwhile, Argentina closed 2023 with an increase of 43.5% year-on-year, that is, about 1,207,900 people entered the country, having a strong recovery since the same month of 2021, when the country definitively reopened its borders, according to to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec).
Meanwhile, the number of foreigners who visited Argentina in the first half of January 2024 increased by 33.5% compared to the same period last year.
