The two New York E-prix seem, at least for the moment, to know a single absolute protagonist: after the pole position and the victory obtained yesterday in the 11th round, today’s qualifying also rewarded again Nick Cassidy in the role of poleman of the second US test, with the New Zealander of Envision author of best time in the final against Antonio Felix da Costa.
A qualifying session that, even in this case, did not reserve sensational twists, starting with the surprises that occurred during the elimination rounds. In fact, in groups A and B, several top drivers missed access to the quarter-finals, starting with the current world leader Edoardo Mortara. Even before the green light came on for the fight in Group B, the Swiss got out of the cockpit of his Venturi, relinquishing his participation due to technical problems. In this way, the Swiss will be forced to start from 21st place for this afternoon’s race, scheduled for 7pm Italian time.
In addition to this episode, group A did not return to the top four even Pascal Wehrlein and Jean-Eric Vergne, respectively in 7th and 8th place, with the French betrayed by a contact against the barriers in the final moments of the test that led him to a premature return to the pits. If we exclude the non-participation of Mortara, group B instead developed with the best time of Di Grassi, then relegated due to a penalty. Without the presence of the Brazilian driver, Evans was thus promoted to the top of the standings ahead of Da Costa, Vandoorne and Lotterer, with Antonio Giovinazzi star of a good 6th place.
After the battle in the groups, Cassidy gave life to his climb to the pole position immediately overtaking Stoffel Vandoorne in the quarterfinals, again defeated after the final staged between the two yesterday. This time, the Mercedes driver had the worst by a tenth – against eight thousandths of the previous qualifying – with Cassidy who then defeated Lotterer in the semifinal, author of an error that cost him a gap of 1 and a half seconds. Da Costa is also very good, winner in the challenges with De Vries and Sims, but unable to get the better of Cassidy by a tenth.
