L’Marrakesh E-Prix ended with a double win for Edoardo Mortaraabsolute protagonist of the tenth round of the world championship: the Swiss Venturi, in addition to having climbed to the top step in front of Antonio Felix da Costa and Mitch Evans, he also established himself as the new leader of the world championship standings, taking advantage of Stoffel Vandoorne’s nightmare weekend. The Belgian of Mercedes, who started from 20th position on the grid, still recovered up to the points, more precisely to 8th place, with a positive result which proved insufficient to be able to defend his leadership in the standings.
A race that, at least initially, actually seemed to smile at the Portuguese Da Costa, able to keep the first position at the start keeping Mortara and his teammate Vergne at a distance, then ousted from the podium area by Evans’ Jaguar. The equilibrium of the race, however, was not so much broken with the first general activation of theattack mode, as with the second. About 35 minutes left of the race, Da Costa himself opted for extra power immediately after the conclusion of the first attack mode, making a move immediately imitated by his direct rivals.
The episode started a series of overtaking and counter-overtaking which proved to be unfavorable for the Portuguese, who thus lost the lead of the race over Mortara and even, at first, the second position over Evans. Worse still went to Vergne, slipped to sixth position behind Dennis and Rowland. In a singular circumstance consisting of drivers without attack modes available, the Frenchman managed to climb up to 3rd place, despite the damage he suffered after bumping into Dennis while overtaking. With 2o minutes to go, the former F1 driver has even bridged the gap on Da Costa, engaged in a duel with Mortara for the first position. Demonstrating a pace higher than that of his teammate, DS Techeetah imposed a team order in Da Costa 10 minutes from the end, thus leaving the way clear to Vergne to attempt the attack on the Swiss. Five turns of the clock later, the transalpine pit wall has sensationally imposed a second team order, allowing Da Costa to take back the second position. A strategy adopted following obvious technical problems accused by Vergne, who in fact finished 4th after being overtaken by Evans on the last lap.
