Dubai Municipality launches building contracting activity with 3D printing technology

Dubai Municipality has launched a group of technical activities specialized in 3D printing technology (construction engineering consultancy activity with 3D printing technology – building contracting activity using 3D printing technology – concrete manufacturing prepared for 3D printing technology), in line with the Dubai 3D printing strategy launched by the owner His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, whereby the municipality, in accordance with Decree No. (24) of 2021, will establish and implement an integrated system for planning, designing and implementing construction work using 3D printing in accordance with approved engineering standards and specifications.

This step comes as a consolidation of Dubai’s leadership as the first city in the world to adopt the strategy and regulation of 3D printing technology in the construction sector, which is one of the modern construction technologies.

Daoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said, “The municipality is working to regulate the use of 3D printing technology, by organizing and encouraging it, giving support and advice to emerging companies in this field, and inviting international companies to enter this field in Dubai, as we are working to make Dubai a center for this.” activity.

He added, “3D printing technology is one of the modern technologies that has become tangibly developed globally in many sectors, which is supposed to contribute to reducing cost and time, which we seek to promote and encourage through the new activities developed by Dubai Municipality for the consultants and contractors sector.”

The new activities target the category of consulting offices, contractors and factories. The new activities are concerned with facilities that use the building system with 3D printing technology and artificial intelligence techniques in the implementation of building construction of all kinds, up to the completion stage, knowing that these activities are available to new companies and can also be added within the activities of offices and companies Existing construction and factories.

In addition, the addition of these activities contributes directly to preparing the labor market and helps in the application of this technology, in raising the percentage of printed buildings in the emirate.

The municipality provided the possibility of applying for new activities by the owner of the company or the license holder, by creating a record for practicing engineering professions in the Dubai Engineering Qualification System on its website, choosing the name of the activity, and then linking the required engineers to it. The municipality also provides the names of consulting offices, contractors, approved factories and construction contractors with 3D printing technology through its smart applications in addition to its official website.

To complement this, the municipality has set requirements to qualify and classify the issuance of a practicing permit for licensed companies.

In accordance with Decree No. (24) of 2021, regarding the regulation of the use of 3D printing technology in construction work in the Emirate of Dubai, the municipality is the authority responsible for regulating this technology, issuing licenses and controlling construction work. By creating and implementing an integrated system for planning, designing and implementing construction and structures in the emirate, using 3D printing, and ensuring its use in accordance with approved engineering standards and specifications, as well as qualifying, registering and classifying engineers and contractors working with 3D printing technology.

Its responsibilities also include determining tests for raw materials, industrial additives and mixtures used in construction work, and tests for structural elements of buildings according to this technology. In addition, the municipality is supervising the establishment of a database of construction works carried out in the emirate through technology, in order to provide the information and data necessary to set technical specifications and standards.

It also conducts studies and technical experiments, and cooperates with specialized research, scientific and engineering bodies for the purpose of developing technology. In addition to preparing indicative models for contracts for the use of technology, and entering into partnerships with international institutions and specialized expertise houses in order to enhance the use of this technology and make the best use of it.

It is noteworthy that Dubai Municipality won the Guinness Book of Records award, after constructing the largest construction building in the world in terms of size using 3D printing technology, which consists of two floors, a height of 9.5 meters, and an area of 640 square meters.
