Drama in Interlagos, little Lorenzo Somaschini dies
An accident has shocked international motorsport in the last few hours. A nine-year-old Argentinian driver – Lorenzo Somaschini – died following a fall on the Interlagos circuit during a free practice of the fourth round of the Honda Junior Cup (Brazilian Superbike championship reserved for minors). The accident occurred last Friday at the exit of Pineirinho (turn 9): Somaschini hit his head severely and his condition immediately appeared very serious: after days of struggle, the little boy didn’t make it, and died in the Italian night.
The little boy, originally from Rosario, died at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, where he had been admitted to intensive care after the accident. On July 17th, what was considered the child prodigy of Argentine motorcycling would have turned ten.
“SuperBike Brasil announces, with great sadness and regret, the death of rider Lorenzo Somaschini which occurred on Monday (17 June), at 7.43pm“, we read in the championship press release.
“The SuperBike Brasil organization has been providing full assistance to the rider’s family since Friday 14 June, when the Argentine fell during the first free practice of the Jr Cup, valid for the 4th round of SuperBike Brasil, at the Interlagos Autodrome. As soon as he fell at Pinheirinho, the pilot was promptly assisted on site by the medical team in an intensive care ambulance. He was then taken to the circuit’s emergency room, where his condition was stabilized. After this procedure, he was transported to an advanced support unit (mobile intensive care) at Pedreira General Hospital, where he remained until the early hours of Saturday morning (June 15), following all medical protocols until he was transferred to hospital. ‘Albert Einstein Hospital. All members of the SuperBike Brasil team are saddened by what happened and express their sincere condolences to all of Lorenzo’s family and friends“.
