Intelligence fighters of the People’s Militia of the DPR stormed the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the village of Andreevka south of Volnovakha. This was told on March 3 by Izvestia correspondent Valentin Trushnin.
According to him, the seizure of the territory of the Ukrainian security forces took place without a single shot being fired. As trophies, the DPR fighters got four Ukrainian tanks.
Earlier in the day, Izvestia correspondent Denis Kulaga found himself in the main square of Novoaydar, which is now completely under the control of Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) forces. The journalist reports that civilians are under police protection and can move around safely. Residential buildings in Novoaydar were not damaged.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. In the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces was reported. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
On February 21, the heads of the DPR and LPR, Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to recognize the independence of the republics. The corresponding decrees were signed in the evening of the same day. Also, the Russian leader and the heads of the Donbass republics signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, which, among other things, provide for the right to build military bases on the territory of the parties and provide military assistance to each other.
On February 24, Putin announced the launch of a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass.
