The Venice Festival was the peak and fall for certain projects. “Don’t worry darling” became the media terror for its director, Olivia Wilde, after the gossip that arose around her, Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and even Chris Pine. As expected, the controversy overshadowed the film’s attempts to become the production of the year, which – believe it or not – increased expectations for its premiere, which in Peru is this September 22.
What is it about?
“Don’t worry honey” (as it is titled in Spanish) brings us closer to Alice and Jack, a young couple who live in a town financed by the mysterious Victoria Project. The husbands of the neighborhood go out each day to work in the barracks, while their wives dedicate themselves to housework and enjoy a life that evokes the style of the 50s.
Clearly, they don’t know exactly what their husbands do at work, much less are they allowed anywhere near corporate boundaries. No one questions what is happening and they just spend their days in an idyllic routine: men at work and women at their chores, like the first episode of “WandaVision”.
However, the tranquility begins to crack when Margaret, one of Alice’s neighbors, acts strangely and refuses to continue with her appearance of the perfect wife: something is happening to her, but she does not seem to have the power to tell what is happening. Or what have you discovered?
An extended chapter of “Black mirror” with hints of “Get out”
“Don’t worry darling” feels like an extended episode of “Black mirror”. That is to say, we come across a narrative based on science fiction and psychological thriller, with hints of terror. Also, despite its temporary setting, you will soon discover that the advanced technological tools have a structural contribution to the plot.
On the other hand, the implicit discourse of its common thread reminds us of “Get out”. In Jordan Peele’s film there was a strong criticism of racial and class segregation. In the case of “Don’t worry honey”, it is a complaint about gender inequality.
The real jewels are not seen, they are felt
The strongest points of “Don’t worry darling” are technical. The photography is well done, the scenes that make detail shots (such as close-ups of food) are very interesting and the sounds pertinently accompany the visual elements.
Without a doubt, the soundtrack is one of the best of the tape. The soundtrack suffocates when it should, makes you tense and takes the pressure off its characters at the right moments.
When it comes to the performances, it is more than clear that Florence Pugh carries the entire film on her shoulders. Although in the cast we have Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, among others, the protagonist is the one who shines completely in each sequence.
As for Harry Styles, his role is minor and does not require further development. He is there and does his job.
Is it worth going to see the movie?
Many say that, in the middle of 2022, the story told in “Don’t worry darling” offers nothing new if you compare it with its similar ones, since it seems to be a blend of references or a rehash of masterpieces. Would they think the same if they didn’t have a preconceived concept in their heads?
The idea of going to see any film is to fully immerse yourself in the experience that its director offers. “Don’t worry honey” is a suspense thriller, in which nothing is what it seems and everything is predisposed for you to take a false step towards the abyss of a disturbing truth.
Yes, the plot leaves points in the air and there are certain issues that could have been better developed. Even so, this bet by Olivia Wilde proposes interesting ideas that perhaps could have been explored or landed in a more solid way, but it fulfills the task of entertaining the viewer. All in all, you may have to choose well who to go see her with, since her story includes scenes of sex, death, self-inflicted damage and a lot of chaos. For sample, this clip.
