Sources say a gunman broke into a weekly meeting at the ministry and began firing.

Dominican Republic Minister of the Environment Orlando Jorge Mera was shot to death at the ministry in Santo Domingo on Monday morning local time. The report was reported by the news agency AFP.
Authority sources tell AFP that the gunman broke into a weekly meeting at the ministry and began firing.
A spokesman for the presidential office said the shooter had been identified and that this was a friend of Jorge Mera. The motive for the act is still unclear, but the shooter is in police custody.
At the time of the event AFP journalists present reported that heavily equipped police officers went inside the ministry.
In addition, local media sources have claimed that the shooter had fortified the ministry with hostages. Police have not yet commented on the case.
Jorge Mera was the former president of the Dominican Republic Salvador Jorge Blancon son.
