New rules
The FIA announced today i new technical regulations defined for Formula 1 starting from the 2026 season. This is an important revolution at an aerodynamic level that follows the transition – perhaps even more important – to a new concept of power unit, still hybrid but ‘simplified’ compared to the current ones and powered by fuel that will be 100% sustainable. The official press release issued by the federation could not miss the reflections of the two ‘masters of steam’, Stefano Domenicali – number one of the Circus – e Mohammed Ben Sualyempresident of the FIA.
Domenicali’s comment
“These regulations mark an important moment for the future of our sport – explained the Imola manager, CEO of F1 – We expect a new generation of cars and powertrains that aim to give our fans more balanced and exciting racing. The new sustainable hybrid power unit represents a huge opportunity for the global automotive industry: It has the potential to be used by cars around the world and drastically reduce emissions. Its potential is one of the main reasons why we will have a record number of engine suppliers in Formula 1 in 2026. We go into this new regulatory cycle with the sport in its strongest position ever and I am confident that the work done by the FIA to create these regulations will further strengthen the position of the sport worldwide”.
Ben Sulayem’s analysis
“After the publication of the Power Unit Regulation 2026 two years ago, we seized the opportunity to redefine chassis regulations to adapt them to the energy requirements of the new power units – explained Ben Sulayem – in collaboration with our Formula 1 partners and with the assistance of the sport’s 10 teams and all interested parties, this is a first-of-its-kind overhaul, which will ensure that our flagship championship is even more closely linked to what that is happening in the world“.
“The Power Unit Regulation has already led to a record number of PU manufacturers engaging in the sport. Now, along with the chassis regulations they provide lighter and more agile cars with innovative aerodynamic solutionswe have created a set of regulations designed not only to improve racing, but also to make the championship even more attractive for manufacturers and engine engineers – concluded the president of the FIA – our goal, together with Formula 1, was to create cars suitable for the future of the elite category of the sport. We believe we have achieved this goal”.
