Sensitive loss in the ATP Finals that start this Sunday in Turin (November 10 to 17). Novak Djokovic has announced through a ‘story‘ on Instagram that he will not defend the Masters Cup title due to an unspecified injury. It should be noted that the Serbian already missed the 1,000 Masters in the French city at the end of October and that he also resigned due to being injured.
In the text, ‘Nole’ specifies the reason why he will not be able to be in the event that brings together the eight best tennis players of the season: “It is quite an honor to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. I really wanted to be there, but due to an injury I won’t be able to play next week. I apologize to those who were planning to see me and I wish all the players a great tournament.”
The Serbian tennis player has not achieved any Grand Slam this year, but he won gold at the Paris Olympic Games
Djokovic had won the last two editions of the Masters Cup, but he will not be able to achieve a third consecutive title which, in turn, could have become the eighth ATP Finals that the Serbian had in his record. This year he has been fifth in the ATP ranking, a year in which the gold achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games stands out but in which he has not achieved any Grand Slam.
The Serbian’s withdrawal allows, in turn, that the list of the eight rackets that will participate in the Turin Masters Cup is already closed. Those chosen are Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alex de Miñaur and Andrey Rublev. The last three are the ones who were still fighting in this week’s tournaments to be able to access the ATP Finals, since Djokovic’s presence would have only allowed two of them to participate. On the other hand, the round robin draw is scheduled for this Thursday.
