Director of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital (RDKB) N.I. Pirogova Elena Petryaykina on November 24, in a conversation with Izvestia, explained the need to vaccinate children against coronavirus.
“The need is due to all the experience of world, historical medicine, the history of medicine. Epidemics stopped and infectious diseases ceased to be the main cause of death of children, when a vaccine was found for all especially dangerous infections, ”Petryaykina said.
The specialist noted that adolescents should take part in the formation of herd immunity.
“Older children, adolescents lead a lifestyle almost the same as adults, with uncontrolled contacts, an active lifestyle is right, but, accordingly, they become, so to speak, full-fledged participants in the spread of infection,” added Petryaykina.
Earlier that day, the rector of the St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University (SPbGPMU) Dmitry Ivanov, in an interview with Izvestia, noted that a myth has developed in society that children do not get COVID-19, but in fact, minors have very difficult cases. He emphasized that 80% of the lungs are affected in children.
The chief freelance pediatrician of the Russian Ministry of Health, Alexander Baranov, confirmed that there are many carriers of the coronavirus among children. He noted that minors can also tolerate COVID-19 asymptomatically.
On November 24, the deputy head of the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, Denis Logunov, said that the vaccine against coronavirus infection for adolescents received a registration certificate.
Also on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated the need to think about creating a coronavirus vaccine for children over two years old.
Russian authorities are urging residents to get vaccinated to protect their health and take care of their loved ones. Citizens are vaccinated for free. Five vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, which became the first vaccine against COVID-19 in the Russian Federation and the world, as well as Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N and KoviVak.
