After a heartbreaking incident in Nueva Morelia, municipality of Chicomuselo, Chiapas, 11 people were brutally murdered in their homes by criminal groups.
“(…) our sisters and brothers from the community of Nueva Morelia, Municipality of Chicomuselo, Chiapas; “Those who resisted the violence of the criminal groups that disputed the area were murdered in a cruel and merciless manner in their homes,” the statement said.
The Diocese of San Cristóbal de Las Casasheaded by Bishop Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez and Auxiliary Bishop Luis Manuel López Alfaro, has issued a letter condemning the act and ensuring that the victims had no ties to organized crime.
The victims, including six men and five women, were attacked in their homes on Sunday afternoon, with two of them found burned after their home caught fire.
According to the diocese, these individuals, who include 73-year-old Alfonso, 28-year-old Teresita de Jesús, and other members of the community, They resisted coercion by criminal groups to join their ranks or leave their homes.
The community has faced extreme violenceincluding threats and harassment, as part of a broader struggle for territorial control and natural resources, including mining exploitation.
The pastoral letter also reflects the continuing endless war in Chiapaswhere residents are used as “cannon fodder” and “human barrier” in conflicts generated by criminal interest in the exploitation of resources.
The local church, deeply affected by these events, has reiterated its commitment to peace and justice, refusing to remain silent in the face of so much injustice and making an urgent call to the authorities to act in accordance with the law.
