Recently it seemed like the deal to bring Intel in Piedmont was well under way. It was about having a chip and technology component factory, with valid repercussions for the related industries, in a region that had already been ‘abandoned’ by Stellantis in anticipation of the Gigafactory of Termoli. Instead, it seems that everything is fading, with a turnaround linked to some critical issues on the production area.
Regarding the commitment in Italy, there are however alternatives. Puglia and Veneto are also vying to host Intel. In short, there is great interest. But the thud of the Turin candidacy still makes noise.
“The negotiation between the US multinational and the Italian government goes on, but only Veneto and Puglia remain from the short list of regions that have applied to host the factory. Piedmont, at the moment, is out even if the decision of the Cirio junta to integrate the dossier with two other areas between the provinces of Novara and Vercelli could push the US evaluators to an additional investigation. This is a faint hope even if ministry sources see the game closed for Piedmont. The move by the Region, in fact, seems to have come out of time. Veneto and Puglia, in fact, immediately put on the table proposals able to satisfy the requests of the multinational, that is free areas of 4 million square meters on which to build your own factory without having to reclaim or renovate existing warehouses or plants.. The subalpine dossier, in the first instance, focused on the smaller Mirafiori area, one million square meters, and above all already urbanized“, Writes the newspaper La Stampa, whose sources had given hope for a ‘Piedmontese’ agreement.
Considering that electronics are predominant in several sectors, including the automotive one, having a plant like Intel’s is absolutely strategic for the government. But the US company will decide where to build it, and in this sense politics does not distinguish between regions: the important thing is to have the factory, regardless of the place.
