Two days before the premiere of the third season of ‘Luis Miguel, the series’ (October 28 on Netflix), Mexican actor Diego Boneta hopes to shake off the lush mane of his emblematic character and surprise the audience with other roles with the who intends to consolidate his career, as he confesses in the following interview granted to La República during the prelude to the delivery of the Platinum Awards.
In fact, Boneta was nominated at this gala in the short list for best supporting male performance for his portrayal as Daniel in the film New Order, a dystopian story that starkly tackles the social polarization and in which he plays a rich young man and despot to whom life teaches a hard lesson.

How much has it cost you to get rid of a role like Luis Miguel and play such a dramatic character in the film Nuevo Orden?
It has not been easy, but for me it was very important not to be pigeonholed in a character, whatever it is. Especially after Luis Miguel I wanted to do something that challenged and challenged me, a totally different character. I repeat, it was not easy, but the preparation was a lot of fun. I prepare all my characters with the teacher Juan Carlos Corazas, and both Daniel and the film Nuevo Orden were very special projects. It is a tough film, an incredible and complex subject that is so specific to Mexico, but at the same time so global, that it happens all over the world. It was a team effort under the leadership of Michel Franco, a director whom I greatly admire.
What’s next for you after Luis Miguel and New Order? What other plans do you also have as a producer?
That (production) is a focus, a side that has a lot of priority for me. On the other hand, I just finished making the movie Father of the Bride with Andy Garcia, which is the remake of this classic, a different story, and I’m very excited and looking forward to it coming out.

We are talking about a comedy. Does the comic streak suit you?
It was something I hadn’t done before, but he’s a character that has absolutely nothing to do with Luis Miguel, he’s totally the opposite, so that was super fun for me.
How has Diego Boneta coped with this pandemic? What things has this health crisis taken away from you or taught you?
It has taught me the importance of health, how important it is to take care of ourselves, it puts everything in perspective a little. As a result of the pandemic I was able to spend a lot of time with my family, but at the same time I think it is something very hard that we will have to continue living with, that it will not go away tomorrow.
