THE large development studios I’m always working on AAA games that, every year, seem to have to get bigger, more expensive, and longer to develop. Some developers, however, think the industry should move towards “mixed” production, with smaller games to act as an interval between one AAA and the next.
According to Josh Sawyer, Design Director at Obsidian, smaller games are good for even big game studios. In a response to a post on X by Cliffhanger Games’ Jeryce Dianingana, Sawyer says that, among other things, allowing studios to take time between larger projects to work on smaller games helps in several ways.
According to Sawyer, among the benefits of working on a smaller game is that studios can minimize the staff turnover that often occurs between larger projects. Developers are also less likely to burn out working on larger projects over the course of a few years.
More opinions on non-AAA games
Dianingana also talks about the idea of having AAA studios working on smaller games, saying that this would improve the variety of games released, as well as allow the same studio to work on and release more games more often.
Mitch Dyer of WB Games Montreal also responded to Dianingana’s post, stating that “AA games with a AAA budget and a AAA team would probably lead to the best games of all time.”
