An elderly man was fined for collecting plastic on the beaches of Lake Garda. Enzo Fattori, known by the locals as “Racman”, was fined 500 euros because local police officers caught him picking up a fender on Feltrinelli beach. It happens in Desenzano del Farda. An ordinance from the Municipality prohibits the recovery of any object between the beaches and the water of Benaco. Hence the hefty fine.
For man, however, that is more of a mission, given that he collects the plastic that pollutes the shores of Lake Garda almost every day. This is one of the volunteers penalized by the Municipality's ordinance which prohibits the removal and collection of material in the water and along the beaches, designed to guarantee the safety of citizens, reports the Corriere.
“A 500 euro fine, I have no words, it's a paradox,” says Fattori in a video published on Facebook. “This ordinance, and I tell you from my heart, change it because nothing can be done this way: you cannot collect paper, glass, plastic”. “Plastic is a polluting material – underlines the volunteer – microplastics and nanoplastics are formed which we then drink, because I drink the mayor's water and so do many others. But it's not my idea, studies and research have been done.” And, adds the volunteer: “I've been doing this for thirty years because I was mostly bothered by plastic, but you can also find diapers, condoms, sanitary napkins, razor blades… The lake is full and if I hadn't continued, we would have beaches in terrible conditions. I never asked for a pair of gloves. And if I find something useful, I take it to the Life Help Center. If I find umbrellas, I rearrange them and then give them away. On the other hand, I received a 500 euro fine for having collected a fender.” The news immediately spread and a collection was started by citizens, who are collecting the 500 euros so as to avoid him having to lose out.
