In Frankfurt on Saturday, 35,000 people took to the streets to demonstrate against right-wing extremism, for some it was the first time ever. What do you hope to achieve from it?
SThey want to be loud against right-wing extremism. This is why people came to downtown Frankfurt am Main on Saturday. Long before the event begins, the first people stand patiently around the Statue of Justice on the Römerberg, looking at the stage in front of the town hall. Some of them are holding homemade colorful signs, others are holding a large flag. It says “Alternative for Stupid” and “Democrats on the Streets”.
When a few hours later a speaker from one of the 60 organizers shouted into the microphone that 40,000 people had come to “defend democracy against the right,” shouts of joy and thunderous applause echoed from the crowded side streets into the square. Nobody expected such a large turnout, neither the organizers nor the demonstrators and not even the Frankfurt police, who had to cordon off the square shortly before the start of the rally because it was already full and who spoke of 35,000 participants after the demonstration.
