Defense Forces | Finland continues arms purchases in the shadow of Russia’s war of aggression: Now there are nearly 40 “Moukars” on the shopping list

Finland plans to acquire more South Korean K9 anti-tank howitzers, which the Defense Forces already have.

The lot to be acquired now is 38 pieces and its price tag is around 134 million euros. It is paid from the additional money that the Finnish Defense Forces received due to the war of aggression against Russia, for weapons purchases that will be started quickly.

Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (central) approved the Defense Forces’ proposal for additional K9 procurement and the State Council supported the procurement on Thursday.

The 38 pieces of howitzers called Moukars that are being bought now also redeem the rest of the option that was included in the deal concluded in 2017. Kaikkonen says in the press release that he is satisfied with the matter.

“With this acquisition, we are significantly strengthening the strike capability of our ground forces,” he states.

In the first one there were 48 of them in the batch and the same number of them were in the option. Ten of them have already been acquired. The total number will thus be 96 tank howitzers.

According to the Defense Forces, the key advantage of the system is the combination of mobility, protection and firepower.

“Panzer howitzers have proven to be operationally reliable in Finland and excellent experiences have been gained from them both in the training of conscripts and in shooting,” it states.
