A stunning fire destroyed a residential building in the city of Valencia in southeastern Spain on Thursday, killing at least nine people, according to a toll reported by the authorities on Friday.
The representative of the central government in the region, Pilar Bernabe, said on Friday evening on the X platform that the criminal police stated “during the identification process that the number of bodies found so far is 9.”
Burnaby had previously stated that it “does not rule out” the possibility of additional deaths “because there will be other searches,” while it is not yet clear how many people may be missing.
On Friday, firefighters and scientific police personnel searched carefully among the rubble of the building, which was completely charred as a result of one of the most dangerous fires that Spain has witnessed in recent years.
The extreme heat in the building, located in the Campanar area, initially prevented them from entering.
According to the head of the Valencia region, Carlos Mazzone, 15 people were treated for varying injuries, including seven firefighters.
