Four people were killed and dozens of others were injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train in the city of Pardubice, east of the Czech capital Prague, a rescue service spokeswoman told state television early Thursday.
A spokesman for the railway fire brigade said that dozens of people were injured in the accident that occurred during the night, adding that some of them were seriously injured. Large numbers of firefighters, paramedics and doctors, in addition to at least one rescue helicopter, were deployed to the accident site (about 100 kilometers east of Prague). Pictures showed that the carriage located directly behind the passenger train locomotive had derailed and was severely damaged. The damaged train was a night express train, and was on its way from Prague to Kosice in Slovakia. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakosan and Transport Minister Martin Kupka went to inspect the accident site, Rakosan said on the X social media platform.
