A cargo plane crashed near the north-eastern Greek city of Kavala late Saturday.
Local media reported that there were 8 people on board the plane, an Antonov AN12 – and there were no survivors.
The flight path of the plane shown on the Flydradar 24 website – to monitor flights – showed that the plane had already reached the northern Aegean Sea near the Halkidiki Peninsula before turning around and heading towards Kavala.
Mobile phone photos taken by residents in the area showed the plane in flames before it crashed.
At first, a large number of firefighters, ambulances and police were sent to the area before withdrawing from the scene and instructing journalists and observers to leave immediately.
A firefighter told the state-run ERT channel that they were waiting for the special forces and that two of his colleagues had been taken to hospital due to breathing difficulties.
The plane nearly crashed into homes and apparently destroyed electricity pylons when it crashed. The electricity was temporarily cut off from the surrounding villages.
