Dead Art academician and author Kirsi Kunnas has died at the age of 96

The municipality was especially known for its children’s poems.

Art academician and author Kirsi Kunnas has died at the age of 96 years. The Kunnas family district told STT about the matter.

The municipality died while sleeping at home in Nurmijärvi. The municipality would have turned 97 in December.

Kunnas was born in Helsinki on December 14, 1924 to a family of visual artists.

He published his first collections of poems after the wars. The municipality was best known for its children’s poems, including collections Titite’s fairytale tree (1956) and Tiitiäinen’s poetic toy (2002). He also wrote lyrics for adults and translated into Finnish, among other things Lewis Carollin and Tove Jansson works.

Kunnas was awarded the title of Academician of Art in 2009. In addition, he has been awarded the State Literature Prize (1957, 1975, 1980 and 1987), the Pro Finlandia Medal (1973), the Honorary Doctor of Humanities of the University of Tampere (2000) and Väinö Linna (2011) and Aleksis Kiven award (2012).

Also spouse of Kunnas Jaakko Syrjä has had a career as a writer. The couple’s two sons are known as members of the band Eppu Normaali.
