The president of Dcoop, Antonio Luque, dropped a bombshell today by assuring that in Spain there is fraud with olive oil “that many companies commit” and that consists of mixing it with pomace or sunflower to lower the price.
This is a relevant fact because of who says it, since Luque presides over the world’s largest producer of olive oil. “We know who is doing it with names and surnames,” he assured, adding that they are very well-known companies but of which he cannot give the name because he lacks the evidence, although he clarifies that experts in the sector will not be able to act surprised because ” “Everyone knows it,” he concluded.
As evidence of what he has stated, the president of Dcoop refers to the prices of ‘liquid gold’, which have been so controversial in the last two years. “Last season, the refined one was worth six euros and the lampante was worth 7,” Luque explained, something that according to him goes against the logic of the market, since the first is in theory more expensive to manufacture than the second, and could only be explained by some kind of adulteration. Even, he explained, the fraud would extend to extra virgin oils, although to a lesser extent.
Dcoop assures that they have addressed the administrations on countless occasions, which according to them have ignored their requests and have limited themselves to referring them to the controls that are currently carried out, which this company considers insufficient because they are based on the tasting system, incapable to locate if an oil has been adulterated.
For this reason, they demand that the Prosecutor’s Office do what it has not done in years, they say, and investigate all Spanish companies, in addition to reforming inspections so that they track the entire transformation process.
As already mentioned, Luque assures that fraud is an open secret in the sector. He even mentions that there is a well-known distribution company that “pays 50% more for oil than the competition because it doesn’t want any scares.”
Likewise, he has revealed that the main reason that explains the absence of Dcoop in the Asoliva and Anierac employers’ associations is the disagreement over what to do with the fraud and the lukewarmness of these two in their fight against it.
