The Colombian David Alonso (CFMoto) had a day to forget in the San Marino Grand Prix. He tried to be offensive to conquer a place on the podium, but he fell short and lost ground in the Moto3 World Championship which leads with 276 points.
According to the criteria of
Angel Piqueras (Honda) He achieved a masterful first Grand Prix victory by winning at the ‘Marco Simoncelli’ circuit in Misano Adriatico, after recovering from seventeenth position following a double ‘long lap’ penalty.
Piqueras, just 17 years old, beat his closest rival, the Spaniard Daniel Holgado (Gas Gas), by just 35 thousandths of a second, with the also Spaniard Iván Ortolá (KTM) on the third step of the podium, to become the first Spaniard to win at Misano Adriatico since Alex Rins (Honda) did so in 2014.
The leader of the world, David Alonsofought until the end for the podium, but had to settle for sixth position, which was seventh, after stepping into the green zone – exceeding the circuit limits – on the last lap.
Bad start for Alonso
There was no surprise at the start, in which David Alonso He started in first position from pole position, but Ángel Piqueras (Honda) surprised everyone from fourth place by getting the best position to negotiate the inside of the ‘transit’ between the first and second curves, where he was already the leader of the race, ahead of Iván Ortolá (KTM), Daniel Holgado (Gas Gas) and David Alonso (CFMoto).
After a very bad start, the Colombian seemed to take things a little more calmly in the initial laps of the race so as not to make the same mistake as at Motorland Aragón.
Ortolá and Holgado pulled very hard to try to definitively break the pace in the main group, which allowed them to increase tenth by tenth the advantage over a trio that stood out from the chasing group, formed by David Alonso, Taiyo Furusato and Joel Kelso, who, in turn, was 1.6 seconds ahead of the next group, led by Dutchman Collin Veijer (Husqvarna).
With less than five laps to go, David Alonso He took action and overtook both Holgado and Ortolá, while Collin Veijer’s group had closed the gap by a second.
That was the moment when David Alonso He decided to become the protagonist and took the lead in the race, only to make a strong push that would definitively break the race, but with which he was unable to leave any of his rivals behind.
Holgado and Alonso They were involved in a spectacular one-on-one while behind them Ángel Piqueras first overtook Collin Veijer to go after Joel Kelso, whom he overtook without problems to ‘hook’ himself into the fight for victory on that same lap, two from the end.
Piquera did not ‘cut’ himself in the slightest and tried to overtake David Alonso to get into second place, although he collided with him and so they entered the last lap, in which Ángel Piqueras was already second behind Daniel Holgado, with the world leader right behind them.
Ángel Piqueras managed to take the lead halfway through the lap with Holgado, Ortolá and Alonso going head to head.
At just 17 years old, Ángel Piqueras was able to defend his first Grand Prix victory, ahead of Daniel Holgado, Iván Ortolá, Taiyo Furusato, Collin Veijer, Joel Kelso, David Alonso, Tatsuki Suzuki, Luca Lunetta and Filippo Farioli.
