The tenth stage of the Dakar reserved for motorbikes had a small appendix, which extended the ranking as regards the five riders who still have a good chance of aiming for the final victory.
The commissioners have inflicted penalties on the two Hondas of Pablo Quintanilla and Joan Barreda, both guilty of exceeding the speed limit in a stretch of transfer.
The Chilean was given a two-minute penalty, double instead for “Bang Bang”, and this clearly had an effect on the classification of today’s stage, but above all on the general classification of the rally raid.
In the ranking of the tenth stage, from Wadi Ad Dawasir to Bisha, Barreda is in fact set back from third to ninth place and is now 7’21 “behind the winner Toby Price. Quintanilla instead slips 15th at 9’05”. So Danilo Petrucci earns a position and thus closes 11th.
The greatest impact, however, as mentioned, is for the general classification, in which Quintanilla is no longer the direct pursuer of the leader Adrien van Beveren, seeing his gap rise to 6’15 “. Between him and the Frenchman’s Yamaha there is in fact, Sam Sunderland’s GasGas is included, now second at 5’59 “.
Barreda also loses one position, retreating from fourth to fifth position in favor of Matthias Walkner’s KTM. The Honda Spaniard now pays 10’47 “, but almost half of his gap is linked to penalties.
What we need to understand now is whether or not these penalties will have an impact on tomorrow’s starting order. Since the infringements occurred in a 29 km neutralization area, between km 258 and km 287, there are those who argue that the penalties should only be applied to the general classification. If so, Barreda and Quintanilla will be forced to take the third and tenth route respectively. However, Honda does not seem to think so and has pointed this out to the commissioners. We will know more tomorrow.
