Despite approval in the Senate, the US's planned billions in aid for Ukraine are not yet certain. The package would be of immense value for Kiev.
Kiev/Washington, DC – New billions in aid from USA for those of Russia attacked Ukraine are despite consent in the senate still in limbo. In the second chamber of the US Parliament House of Representativesthere is a threat of a blockade – even if US President Joe Biden urged Republicans to stop standing in the way of passing Ukraine aid.
“The question is what happens next in the House of Representatives – the Senate was the first, easier step,” said military expert Gustav Gressel in an interview with fr.de from IPPEN.MEDIA. It is “about long-term financing,” which is initially good for Ukraine.
“Most of this budget will go towards expanding munitions production – from anti-aircraft defenses to artillery ammunition. And for all such long-term productions you need long-term financing,” says Gressel. The expert was confident: “Together with what comes from the European Union, this will carry Ukraine through this year.”
60 billion dollars for Ukraine: In the end, the US House of Representatives decides
On Tuesday, after months of wrangling, the US Senate approved an aid package worth billions for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. It's about 60 billion US dollars (almost 56 billion euros), most of it for military support. This draft now goes to the other chamber of parliament, the House of Representatives. It is highly questionable whether the package will get through there. The Republicans have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, and representatives from the right-wing fringe of the party are
pushing forward – spurred on by Donald Trump – has long been against further US aid to Kiev.
The Republican representatives in the chamber must decide whether they stand for freedom or for tyranny, said President Joe Biden. They would have to decide whether they would be on the side of Ukraine or on the side of the Russian president Wladimir Putin – on America’s side or on the side of former US President Donald Trump. Also the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to MPs to agree to the aid.
The Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has already indicated that he might not put the bill to a vote at all. Biden said the draft would have a majority. Johnson knows that too.
Ukraine is waiting in vain for further US aid: the federal government hopes for insight
The USA is considered Ukraine's most important ally. Since the war began in February 2022, Biden's government has provided or promised military aid worth more than $44 billion (around €41 billion). Since the end of December, Kiev has been waiting in vain for new financial commitments and additional weapons and ammunition from the USA.
The German government has expressly welcomed the US Senate's support for an aid package worth billions for Ukraine. “The funds provided for therein are important and of great importance so that Ukraine can continue to defend itself against the Russian war of aggression,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit on Wednesday. At the same time, he expressed his hope that the US House of Representatives would now also approve the project. (nak/dpa)
