Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor will race with a Corvette C8.R in IMSA’s new GTD Pro category, competing for the entire season, while Nicky Catsburg will join them for the endurance races.
In the FIA WEC, Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner will drive the C8.R in the GTE Pro class, with Alexander Sims reinforcing the crew in the longer stages. Both cars will then participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
It will be the first time in Corvette Racing history that the team will participate in the two main endurance championships.
“This is the most ambitious program Corvette Racing has faced in its nearly 25 years of racing,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet’s vice president of performance and motorsport. “It will be an honor to race both in IMSA and in the WEC, on some of the most beautiful tracks in the world”.
Compared to the C8.R GT Le Mans which will be used for the last time this Saturday at Petit Le Mans, the Corvette C8.R GTD Pro will race with a revised airfoil, with specific Michelin tires, and will have slightly reduced power on its 5.5-liter V8, as per GTD regulations. The ABS system will also be adopted, tested by the team in the Belle Isle race last June.
In the WEC, the 2022 season for Tandy and Milner will start with the Sebring 1,000 Mile on March 18, in a double with IMSA, which will instead play its 12 hours the following day. Monza, Fuji and Bahrain, on the other hand, will be completely new tracks for the team.
Corvette’s new GT3 program
Chevrolet has also confirmed that I will be selling the Z06 GT3.R Corvettes for the start of the 2024 season. Based on the road Z06 – the 670 horsepower version of the C8 Stingray, which goes on sale next summer – the GT3.R will share the same aluminum chassis, with a new LT6 engine modified for racing, and similar aerodynamic characteristics.
It is the first time that Chevrolet has offered a turnkey racing Corvette designed for customers that can race in a wide variety of GT3 championships.
Mark Stielow, Chevrolet Motorsport Engineer Director, said: “It is an exciting time for Corvette, first with the launch of the Z06 road and now with the confirmation that the Corvette Z06 GT3.R will arrive for customers. the first time for customers to race with a Corvette that has benefited from the rich history of Corvette Racing. “
Support package prices and options will be confirmed at a later date.
