Coronavirus The recession caused by the corona pandemic has diverged from previous economic crises: Women’s employment weakened more than men’s

In studies, the coronary crisis has been called she-cession, which is a twist on the English word recession for recession.

Coronary pandemic The economic downturn caused by Statistics Finland has deviated from previous economic crises in that women’s employment has declined more than men’s, according to data compiled by Statistics Finland.

The interest rate crisis has lost 38,000 jobs in the Finnish labor market. That is far less than the loss of 450 000 jobs in the recession of the early 1990s or the loss of 90 000 jobs in the financial crisis of the 21st century.

This year, employment has already increased.

“The corona crisis has survived with relatively little damage in relation to previous employment crises and what was feared,” said Statistics Finland’s specialist researcher. Hanna Sutela on Tuesday at a webinar organized by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

Usually recessions weaken employment in male-dominated cyclically sensitive industries more sharply and more widely than in female-dominated service sectors, but during the Korona period the situation has been the opposite.

Over the past year, employment for men fell by 14,000 and for women by 24,000.

“Women’s employment has fallen more than men’s in Finland and in other countries. Also in those countries where men’s employment has suffered more, the gender gap has been smaller. That is why the corona crisis has been called she-cession in the research literature, ”Sutela said.

She-cession is a twist on the English word recession for recession.

Appearance however, it is a little different if you look at it in terms of payroll.

Between March 2020 and August 2021, the wage bill has fallen by more than 10 per cent from the corresponding level in 2019 in four industries: accommodation, culture, water transport and catering.

Working hours decreased the most last year in the accommodation and food service activities.

Research Professor at the State Economic Research Center Tomi Kyyrä said at a THL seminar that most industries have done quite well during the Korona period and the four industries that have suffered the most are quite small. Their share of the 2019 salary amount was 2.5 percent.

“Accommodation and catering are female-dominated sectors, but on the other hand, the largest, yet female-dominated sectors, such as social care services, health services and public services, have done reasonably well. Against this background, it seems that the corona crisis has not fully targeted female-dominated sectors. ”

Statistics Finland according to 2019, women lost almost exclusively part-time jobs and men lost full-time jobs over the past year.

Working hours decreased the most last year – by almost a quarter compared to 2019 – in the accommodation and food service sector, of which more than a third is part-time work. Working hours fell sharply in retail and the arts, which are also female-dominated.

The only male-dominated sector that clearly suffered from the corona crisis was transportation and storage, where work is mostly full-time.
