Update from November 5, 8:20 p.m .: “We are all facing a socio-political challenge,” explains Schallenberg. The goal is to get as many people as possible in Austria to have the corona vaccination. “It is up to us to protect ourselves voluntarily,” said Schallenberg. “Please do it,” he appeals.
Update from November 5th, 8:17 pm: The press conference begins. Chancellor Schallenberg opens. “Unfortunately, the numbers are increasing rapidly,” he explains. The occupancy of the intensive care units is increasing faster than expected. The stages of the original phased plan are brought forward. From Monday, 2G will apply nationwide, everywhere where 3G was previously applicable. Also for events of 25 people or more. For a transition period of four weeks, people who have been vaccinated once with a PCR test also count under the 2G rule.
Update from November 5th, 8:10 p.m .: The start of the press conference after the Corona summit in Austria has been delayed a little.
Corona in Austria: press conference expected at 8 p.m.
Update from November 5th, 7:50 p.m .: Austria’s Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) are expected to make a statement after the Corona summit around 8 p.m. In view of the current number of infections in the Alpine republic, the government was under pressure to act.
Again courier and other Austrian media want to know in advance from negotiating circles, in future only 2G will apply wherever the 3G rule currently applies. In addition, there should be a general FFP2 mask requirement for retailers. Before that, there was speculation about drastic tightening (see first report).
Corona in Austria: Winter season “the top priority” this year
Update from November 5th, 5.45pm: Despite the rapidly increasing corona numbers, Austria’s top politicians assume that the upcoming winter season will succeed. “The top priority must be that this year’s winter season takes place,” said Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP) on Friday after a meeting with representatives from all nine federal states in Leogang.
The industry is very well prepared and has taken numerous safety precautions. 3G is mandatory in cable cars and similar means of transport. Tyrolean head of state Günther Platter (ÖVP) recalled the extensive cancellation of the 2020/2021 winter season due to the corona pandemic, which had led to high unemployment in Tyrol.
With the vaccination, the initial situation is now completely different from a year ago, said Köstinger with a view to the current infection process, which is very similar to that in November 2020. At that time, there was a nationwide lockdown, which the Austrian government has ruled out this time, at least for vaccinated people. Most tourists are vaccinated, said Salzburg’s state chief Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP). “Our guests have learned to live with the pandemic.”
Corona summit in Austria: Another lockdown cannot be ruled out
Update from November 5th, 12:49 p.m .: Tonight at 6 p.m., the Austrian government is advising on further corona measures. The first governor, Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP), has already made a first gloomy forecast. The Salzburg governor no longer rules out another lockdown. This is reported by, among others ORF.
A few weeks ago politicians took a very different point of view on this issue. Another lockdown was even categorically rejected. Because of the rapidly increasing number of infections, this opinion has now changed.
In order to prevent this drastic Corona measure, Haslauer appeals to the Austrians to have the third vaccination. “There is no threat of lockdown if the booster vaccination works. If the vaccinated do not carry out a third vaccination, then a lockdown cannot be ruled out. But I hope that it doesn’t come to that. “
Corona summit in Austria: Drastic tightening threatens
Original article dated November 5th: Vienna – The corona situation in Austria is getting worse. This applies both to the drastically increasing number of infections and to the situation in the intensive care units. Are the whole country now threatened with enormous tightening? The decision will be made on Friday, November 5th, at the Corona summit in Vienna. From 6 p.m., Chancellor Schallenberg will discuss with the cabinet how things will continue in pandemic-stricken Austria.
Corona summit in Austria: plans for 2.5G leaked
The first details have already been leaked. As oe24 reported, the government probably wants to stick to the outdated step-by-step plan. 2G is already in force throughout Austria for larger events and night-time catering. If Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein has his way, level three should be fixed throughout the country.
Specifically, that would mean: All previous 3G areas – such as workplaces, hotels and restaurants – will become 2.5G. Only those who have been vaccinated, who have recovered and who have been tested by PCR would have access there. In addition to this, an FFP2 mask requirement is probably planned in retail.
Corona in Austria: 2G in the future at hairdressers and in bars across the country?
It is also possible that 2G will generally be extended to all events. Vienna has already rushed ahead when it comes to corona rules. Soon only those who have recovered or have been vaccinated will have access to the entire leisure area. The state government could also follow this example. In order to save their winter season, this proposal should primarily be supported by the western federal states.
A way out of the current corona development could also be the third vaccination. In Israel, for example, the validity of the green passport has been reduced to six months with two vaccinations. According to oe24 this possibility is also up for debate in Austria.
Austria records a new annual high for corona infections
No matter how the negotiations at the Corona summit end. The Austrian politicians agree on one point: something has to be done. On Friday alone, the country recorded a new annual high for infections. 9,388 new corona cases were reported within 24 hours. At the same time, the situation in the intensive care units is becoming more and more dramatic.
When it comes to corona rules, Vienna is already one step ahead. Soon only those who have recovered or have been vaccinated will be allowed to visit bars and hairdressers. In Germany, like in Austria, advice is given. The health ministers around Jens Spahn want to present their corona plan on Friday. (kof)
