The Reich Institute for Health and Environment is responsible for infectious diseases in the Netherlands. Now the authority has found an explanation for the increase in infection.
The Hague – Three weeks ago, the easing of the corona measures started in the Netherlands. The country is now facing a sharp increase in corona infections. The number of deaths from the coronavirus also increased. The Dutch health authority sees a connection between the easing and the current situation.
After easing: Corona infections in the Netherlands are increasing
It is a path that many countries are currently taking with increasing vaccination rates. Slowly loosen the rules, try to get back to normal. Iceland plans to end its remaining restrictions from November 18, in Germany Health Minister Jens Spahn wants the corona emergency to expire at the end of November. It is a path that has met with criticism from some. In the Netherlands, too, people are no longer so sure whether the easing was the right step. The sharp increase in corona infections and patient numbers in hospitals does not seem to be stopping. The hospitals have to cancel operations again because the intensive care units are getting full. About 80 percent of Covid patients are not vaccinated.
According to the dpa, 48 deaths in connection with Covid-19 have been reported in the past seven days. A doubling compared to the previous week. The number of new infections also increased – by 44 percent compared to the previous week, around 25,700 cases have been reported. The incidence is 151. The relevant Reich Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) announced the numbers on Tuesday. According to the agency, a direct link can be established between the easing measures taken three weeks ago and the current situation. The mask requirement was lifted – except for wearing in local public transport – and the distance rule of 1.5 meters completely overturned. 3G proof is only required before visiting restaurants.
Despite imposed restrictions, the numbers in another EU country are also continuing to rise – it is now imposing the toughest lockdown since the start of the pandemic. (live)
