Update from December 4th, 5:19 p.m .: 4,805 people infected with corona currently have to be treated in intensive care units in Germany. That comes from the daily report (Saturday, December 4th) of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Divi). With eight new intensive care patients within one day, the number rose to over 4,800 for the first time in 213 days. This was last the case on May 5th.
2560 of the 4805 patients have to be invasive civil servants, according to Divi. A total of 87.4 percent of intensive care beds in Germany are currently occupied. 3,113 beds are still available – however, they are not evenly distributed across the republic, so that in some regions there is still an intensive care bed emergency.
Corona in Germany: Baden-Württemberg wants to keep schools open “until nothing works”
Update from December 4th, 3:39 p.m .: Despite the dramatic Corona situation, Baden-Württemberg wants to keep its schools open until “nothing else works”. “With incidences like we have in Saxony, around 2000,” the schools will be closed, said the Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann on Saturday (December 4) on the sidelines of the Green Party conference in Heidenheim.
Currently, the nationwide incidence is 525.3 (as of Friday, 4:00 p.m.). According to the State Health Office, two municipalities are just below the incidence mark of 1000: the Schwarzwald-Baar district (975.7) and the Tuttlingen district (987.4).
Corona situation in Germany “dramatic”: Merkel turns to citizens for the last time
Update from December 4th, 12:36 p.m .: The outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the citizens for the last time during her term of office in her podcast. “We are in a very serious situation in the middle of this fourth wave of pandemics, in some parts of our country it can only be called dramatic,” said Merkel. In the fight against the coronavirus, the head of government urged: “Take the insidious virus seriously.”
Merkel advertised first and booster vaccinations, and the CDU politician referred to “overcrowded intensive care units”, seriously ill people who had to be flown across Germany, and the currently “terribly high number” of people who died in connection with the corona virus come. “Each of them leaves families or friends, stunned, at a loss, helpless. It’s so bitter because it could be avoided, ”said Merkel. “With the effective and safe vaccines, we have the key in hand.”
Corona in Germany: Chancellor Merkel thanks the “large majority in our country”
The Chancellor also thanked everyone “who are sensible and understanding during this difficult time” and who adhered to the rules out of self-protection and care for others. “They make up the vast majority in our country. Every day they show the civic spirit that is so wonderful about our country – and without which no Federal Chancellor and no government can achieve anything. “
Update from December 4th, 12:13 p.m .: In Germany, around 13 million people have now received their booster vaccination against the coronavirus. According to the Federal Ministry of Health on Saturday (December 4), a total of 896,000 corona vaccinations were carried out the day before. In addition, the ministry announced that 57.3 million people (68.9 percent) have full basic protection with the mostly necessary second injection. 59.8 million people or 71.9 percent of all residents have now received a first corona vaccination.
Corona in Germany: President of the German Medical Association calls for a shorter booster break
Update from December 4th, 10:07 a.m .: The President of the German Medical Association, Klaus Reinhardt, has called for the break between corona second vaccination and booster vaccination to be shortened from six to five months. According to Reinhardt, nothing speaks against such a measure, “if really enough vaccine is made available as promised,” said the doctor New Osnabrück newspaper. “That would make for a lot more speed,” Reinhardt is certain.
If the deadline of six months were maintained in Germany, according to the medical president, over twelve million people would have to wait until January 1st for the booster vaccination. “That would be an unnecessary brake,” said Reinhardt. In general, he stated that the booster vaccinations were urgently needed to break the fourth wave. “The more people are boosted, the fewer vaccination breakthroughs and seriously ill there will be.”
According to the currently valid Stiko recommendation, the booster vaccination should “usually take place six months after the last vaccine dose of the basic vaccination”. However, the vaccination doctors are already given leeway to shorten the interval “in individual cases” to five months or “if there is sufficient capacity”.
Corona in Germany: hospitals overloaded – experts fear higher numbers
First report from December 4th, 9:08 a.m .: Berlin – According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) *, the seven-day incidence * in Germany rose again slightly. On Saturday morning (December 4), the RKI stated that the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week is 442.7. On Friday (December 3rd) the value was 442.1, a week earlier at 444.3 (previous month: 183.7).
Across Germany, the health authorities reported a total of 64,510 new corona infections to the RKI within one day (source: RKI dashboards, December 4, 3:48 a.m.). Exactly one week ago there were 67,125 infections. However, experts are currently assuming a noticeable underreporting and give this to consider when assessing the infection rate. As a result, health authorities and clinics can no longer keep up with reporting Corona * cases, at least in individual regions.
The RKI is also finding it difficult to assess the situation. The slowed rise in the seven-day incidence could “on the one hand be a first indication of a slightly weakening dynamic in the transmission process due to the significantly intensified measures to reduce contact,” said the RKI weekly report on Thursday evening (December 2nd). However, the development could “regionally also be due to the increasingly overloaded capacities in the public health service and the exhausted laboratory capacities”.
Corona in Germany: the death toll increases significantly
According to the new information, 378 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 303 deaths. The RKI has counted 6,116,070 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the corona pandemic *. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized. The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI on Friday (December 3) as 5.52 (December 2: 5.47).
The value plays an essential role in assessing the occurrence of the infection. If limit values 3, 6 and 9 are exceeded in the federal states, stricter measures to combat the pandemic can be imposed there. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered on Saturday (December 4) as 5,058,200. The number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 102,946.
