“About 17 percent of Europeans think coriander tastes like soap,” explains nutritionist Monica Mars. “In cultures where coriander is traditionally used in many dishes, this number is much lower. It has recently been discovered that it has a hereditary origin. Research with thousands of twins shows that identical twins (with identical DNA) have the same preference, but that this is only the case in fraternal twins in half of the cases.”
..People with a certain genetic predisposition can smell the typical smell of coriander better, so they experience a soapy taste.”
“Part of the taste is determined by odors that are released during chewing. However, it is not yet known which gene on human DNA is responsible for liking or disliking coriander.”
