Donatella Di Bona made an appeal to Pope Francis: what was the woman's request
Donatella Di Bona, the woman sentenced to sixteen years in prison for the murder of her twenty-six month old son on 17 April 2019, asked the Pope for forgiveness during the ceremony of foot washing of Holy Thursday. The woman, a guest of the Rebibbia prison, participated in the ceremony together with 12 other inmates and was the protagonist of a touching moment in which she expressed her repentance and asked for forgiveness for the terrible gesture committed.
Di Bona's lawyers, Lorenzo Prospero and Chiara Cucchi, they made it known that the 34-year-old, since 2022, has regretted the event of which she is guilty and spends her days in prayer and carrying out social recovery activities. After the Court of Appeal's ruling, the woman declared that she wanted to renounce her appeal to the Supreme Court and to serve her sentence in full.
The murder of little Gabriel had shocked public opinion. The child was crying while his mother and her partner were having sexual intercourse: this was the prisoner's fault. Even the father of the child, Nicola Feroleto, he was convicted of complicity in the facts, having witnessed without intervening and attempted to build an alibi by distorting the truth about his position at the time of the crime.
When the authorities realized that the woman's version, according to which the child had been hit by a hit-and-run driver, did not hold up, they began the judicial process. The wounds of the child were not compatible with a road accident and Di Bona confessed to the murder a few hours later. Subsequently, the child's father was also arrested, accused of having hidden the body among the brambles.
Donatella Di Bona experienced a moment of redemption during the ceremony with Pope francesco, where she asked for forgiveness for her inhumane act and demonstrated that she is aware and repentant of her mistakes. However, her story remains a tragedy that will remain etched in the memory of all those who followed her closely.
