Residents of La Lengua de la Vaca, in Los Nietos, and Los Alemanes, in La Manga, disagree on the suitability of the chosen spaces
Until the end of this month of August, the Cartagena City Council will not open the two new canine beaches in the municipality, but the controversy between the neighbors over the suitability of the chosen places is already served. While some praise the proposal, others reject it, because they doubt its necessity. Los Alemanes beach, in La Manga, and Lengua de la Vaca, in Los Nietos, have been the two selected areas that will allow dogs to stay and bathe under the supervision and responsibility of their owners.
In the first of them, the businessman Pedro Conesa has his beach bar and although he thinks it will be good, because it will attract more vacationers, he believes that we have to wait to see its effectiveness. He does not understand why the City Council has chosen that beach, “because very few people come here to bathe, so much so that the beach bar is not open in the mornings.”
José Antonio Moreno is a resident of Playa Paraíso, next to Los Alemanes. He views this initiative with suspicion, because “if we already have the sidewalks and town squares full of excrement, the same thing will happen on the beach and we will end up with a hygiene problem.”
In the second, Miguel Pedreño, a bather in the area, believes that “dogs can also have their space”, but fears that this could affect the state of the Mar Menor in some way. In this case it is the best bathing area in Los Nietos and with enough space for dogs. Rosa Boluda, a neighbor who spends the summer in the Lengua de la Vaca, was surprised to hear the news. “I don’t think it’s a problem, although there will always be neighbors who see it badly, because they believe that the lagoon could be affected in some way,” she said. City Hall sources indicated that these places will be properly marked and conditioned.
