Also in 2022 Continental will be the exclusive tire supplier for the off-road championship Extreme E, dealt with electric SUVs and related to Alejandro Agag’s Formula E. The second season will start on February 19th and 20th with the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia, and will take place with the new version of the model CrossContact Extreme E.
Continental engineers took care not only to improve performance, but also to increase the percentage of sustainable materials used by completely redesigning the tread compound and the tire carcass. Overall, the new CrossContact Extreme E about one third is made up of recycled and renewable raw materials. For this purpose, for example, silica extracted from the ashes of rice husks, a residue from agricultural processing, is used. In addition to treated steel and carbon black, Continental is also using polyester yarn made from recycled PET bottles for the first time. Thanks to the use of plastic bottles, conventional polyester has been completely replaced in the new CrossContact Extreme E.
The polyester in the carcass, i.e. the load-bearing structure of a tire, is produced by a Continental partner with the help of the so-called ContiRe.Tex technology and without any intermediate chemical steps, starting from old PET bottles that can no longer be reused . Each of the thirty tires that Continental supplies to each of the ten teams in the Extreme E series, throughout the second season, now contains polyester made from around sixty recycled PET bottles. This technology will also be introduced in the series production of various Continental premium tires later this year.
The dimensions, diameter and width of the Continental brand tire for Extreme E remained unchanged, i.e. equal to 37 X 12.5 R17, therefore 37 inches (940 mm) in diameter, 12.5 inches (317 mm) in width and 17 inches (432 mm) of rim.
