Vantaa wants its own “Fiskars”, i.e. the Western Uusimaa ironworks milieu with its old buildings.

Vantaa wants a new residential area that could become the city's own “Fiskars”: an iron mill milieu with a romantic atmosphere.

For the people of Vantaa who dream of their own farm and potato country, there have been only a few plots of land available in the city in recent years.

Situation is now changing. “Fiskars” is arranged on the south side of Katriina Hospital.

Katrineberg's small house area is inspired by the Fiskars ironworks milieu in Western Uusimaa, where old buildings, artisans' premises and housing overlap each other.

The zoning of another small house area is looming in the near future. It is Rauhalanlaakso, planned as an area of ​​small houses to the north of Kivistö station.

This is therefore significant, because after Itä-Hakkilä, the city has not opened a new unified area of ​​small houses for years. New small houses have been created mainly by dividing old large plots.

The decision-makers have been concerned about house builders moving into neighboring municipalities.

On the map the two new small house areas are surprisingly close to each other, even though Katrineberg is located in Seutula and Rauhalanlaakso in Kivistö. Vantaanjoki runs between them.

An international design competition will open in the Katrineberg area in April, with the search for an expressive small house area while respecting the old.

There are several buildings in the manor area for which a new purpose of use is being sought. They could become, for example, spaces for craftsmen.

In competition carbon-neutral solutions are also being sought. For example, Katrineberg is not in the district heating network of the city of Vantaa, so the heating of the houses must be considered in the planning phase.

“Katrineberg is a great rural milieu, where the built cultural environment is valuable”, points out Vantaa's new urban planning director Sampo Perttula.

The city owns the manor's main building and the land in the area. In recent years, the main building has served as a meeting place for residents. The planning area is about 120 hectares, and there would be about 2,000 residents.

Sampo Perttula has worked as Vantaa's urban planning director for half a year. The zoning is still occupied by planning related to the tram line, but the changes in the new small house areas are also being worked on.

Katrineberg the larger area of ​​about 140 hectares is Rauhalanlaakso, where the city is currently adjusting the framework.

Perttula reminds that the framework is only the beginning of the planning work. Only after that do we start planning in more detail.

Even this old field landscape would be mostly a small house area, but services would also be located in Rauhalanlaakso: schools and kindergartens.

It will be a few more years before construction begins in Rauhalanlaakso.

The downturn in construction gives municipalities the opportunity to plan new areas in peace.

The vast majority of the Rauhalanlaakso area is the former Saras estate, whose land redemption delivery ended in 2021.

The dispute regarding redemption principles and compensation is currently ongoing In the proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights (EIT).. A solution is expected from EIT during this year.

Vantaa eagerly awaiting the construction of the tramway. Negotiations are currently underway regarding the state's participation in this project.

The decisions will have a wide impact on the residential areas that will be zoned in the next few years.

Dense construction and apartment buildings are coming along the tramway. One of the biggest design targets is the area of ​​the Tikkurila Väritehtaa in the Keravanjoki.

The plans and formulas of the new learning campus arranged on the east side of the main railway in Tikkurila will be refined during this year.
