The match between the Sierra Massains and Karabibos teams was heading to a goalless draw, when the second team’s goalkeeper was injured, which made the referee seek medical help.
A video clip published by the British newspaper “Daily Mail” showed the players gathering around the goalkeeper, before hearing bursts of fire.
The players were surprised by what was happening as they did not move at first, but they rushed to take cover in safe areas of the stadium, for fear of being shot.
And local Brazilian media indicated that the sound of bullets was caused by a security operation that the police forces were carrying out in an area adjacent to the stadium.
None of the players was shot, and the match was not completed, pending the decision of the League Organizing Committee, whether it was to fix the result, or to repeat the match again.
