Confronting climate change…pioneering Emirati steps
As is its constant habit of choosing beneficial topics and issues of great importance, the efforts of the United Arab Emirates come in dealing with one of the most important issues that is currently troubling the entire world, which is the issue of climate change and how to deal with its effects according to the latest and best scientific and technological methods.
Since the beginning of the emergence of this global challenge, the UAE’s interest in working with the rest of the world to preserve the safety of the planet has been embodied, as it participated in all meetings organized in this regard in various parts of the world, and it ratified the climate agreement in 1995, and also ratified the “Protocol.” Kyoto in 2004… just like the most important climate agreement in the world, i.e. the “Paris Agreement” to deal with climate change, which resulted from a conference in which the majority of countries in the world participated and ratified its outcomes.
Initially, the state’s efforts in responding to the climate challenge focused on mitigation and adaptation according to the best scientific and technical methods to reduce climate change, in addition to working to improve the oil industry and striving primarily towards creating a clean environment in this field, and reducing emissions resulting from the activities of the industrial sector as a whole. This is done by using the most advanced modern technologies, and using safe tools that are compatible with climate change.
The Emirates adopted many of the foundations and concepts of green architecture and worked to raise awareness of its importance, planting trees and creating forests, and working to protect the marine environment. In all of this, it had a good precedent and very promising results.
Along with these policies aimed at protecting the environment, keeping pace with climate change, and working to reduce it, there also came a series of measures and procedures aimed at mitigating the risks facing the Earth and working to adapt to and reduce the effects resulting from these risks. Here we should mention that the UAE has worked to adopt the option of renewable and clean energy, especially in the field of electricity production and water desalination, which has contributed to significantly reducing emissions in the country.
We also mention that the country has adopted a policy of diversifying energy sources and not relying on a single source, which was contributed to by the decision to utilize peaceful nuclear energy to produce electricity, as well as solar energy, which the UAE has worked on establishing dozens of projects inside and outside the country, in the context of dealing with the problem of climate change.
Hence, the efforts, actions and decisions taken by the UAE in dealing with the challenge of climate change should be praised according to a clear and long-term future vision that makes protecting the environment a top priority in its concerns.
