The company says that it offers all those who are laid off the opportunity to move to work at their other factories in Finland.
Food company Atria has decided to close its Sahalahti poultry factory located in Kangasa, Pirkanmaa during 2024.
The company announced the outcome of the change negotiations on Friday. The negotiations concerned all approximately 130 employees of the factory.
With the help of cost-saving measures, the company says it seeks savings of around five million euros annually. Director of Atria’s poultry business Matti Perälä tells STT that the reason behind the decision to close the factory is the increased competition in the industry and higher production costs.
“The competitive situation is such that we need to review our own actions and strive to improve profitability and production efficiency,” he says.
In its latest semi-annual review in October, Atria said that the increase in costs weighed on the company’s profit. The company’s adjusted operating profit in July–September was 16.2 million euros.
Managing director Juha Gröhn stated in connection with the results announcement that the price of energy in particular is a significant factor of uncertainty in the coming winter.
The company says in the announcement that they intend to concentrate their poultry production at their factory in Nurmo in South Ostrobothnia. Atria plans to offer all those to be dismissed the opportunity to move to work at other company factories in Finland.
Atria bought the Sahalahti production facility in 2014 from Saarioinen.
Perälä says that the company does not yet have an estimate of how many people’s employment will eventually end when the factory in Sahalahti is closed.
“The plans will certainly become clear at the latest at the point when the matter is topical,” says Perälä.
“Of course, we hope that as many as possible will move. Sahalahti’s staff are good staff, which we also need today,” he continues.
Atria is currently building a completely new poultry factory in Seinäjoki, Nurmo. The company already has its own unit in the area, where change negotiations are currently underway.
According to Perälä, the new factory is scheduled to be ready in 2024.
