Party tourists should no longer feel welcome on Mallorca: Strict rules prevent alcohol consumption at Ballermann. The police are taking tough action.
Palma de Mallorca – Mallorca is a popular destination for party tourists – much to the displeasure of many of the island’s residents. Binge drinking, fights, acts of violence and noise pollution occur regularly. Palma de Mallorca now wants to put a stop to drinking tourism with strict rules.
Whether this works also depends on how consistently the police enforce the bans. Last Wednesday (May 15), officers at Ballermann apparently already tightened the reins.
Quiet evening at the Ballermann: Police apparently start an operation against alcohol black market sellers
Shortly after the introduction of the strict alcohol regulations, things were quite civilized last Saturday, but many holidaymakers still had beer cans in their hands, reported German press agency. Actually, drinking is Alcohol banned in public since May 11th. In Magaluf, Playa de Palma and Arenal, supermarkets, vending machines or kiosks are no longer allowed to sell alcohol between 9:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. In Spain one says: “Hecha la ley, hecha la trampa”, which means something like “As soon as there is a law, there are already loopholes”.
The black market in alcohol therefore flourishes late at night. According to a report by the Bild newspaper Last Wednesday, the police were out with motorcycles and patrol cars to find the illegal traders. It was said that there were exceptionally few people around the Ballermann that evening and the noise level was lower than usual.
“We didn’t notice it that way during the day, but from the evening onwards there was a lot of police presence at the Ballermann. The police go up and down here all the time,” said a tourist Picture-Newspaper.
Even the Ballerman star welcomes the stricter rules: “There are just too many idiots”
In April, Mallorcan police took action against street vendors who illegally sell sunglasses, bags and clothing. Loud Diary of Mallorca Officers arrested six people and confiscated around 10,000 items. Island experts warn against overestimating the authorities’ measures. “It’s the same every year,” said Beatrice Ciccardini, landlady of the “Zur Krone” restaurant, in an interview with the Mallorca newspaper. At the beginning of the season more police appear, but they rarely actually intervene.
The Locals mostly see the stricter regulations as positive, because there is great dissatisfaction with mass tourism. This can also be seen in the large protest demonstration planned for May 25th in Palma. “There are simply too many idiots who leave the beach like a pigsty – and that’s because of the alcohol,” says Ballermann star Ikke Hipgold, of all people, in welcoming the new rules in an interview t online. In addition to the alcohol regulations, the new regulations in Mallorca also prohibit climbing around on balconies. That’s not without reason either: just last week Another German holidaymaker fell to his death from a balcony.
