Fossil fuel industries are the “godfathers of climate chaos” and should be banned from advertising in all countries, as is the case with tobacco restrictions. This was declared by the Secretary General of the United Nations, relaunching the latest scientific alarms on global warming. In a major speech in New York, António Guterres called on the media to stop enabling the “destruction of the planet” by accepting fossil fuel advertising money, warning that the world faces a “moment of climate crisis” .
“Many governments limit or ban advertising of products that harm human health, such as tobacco,” he said. «I urge all countries to ban advertising by fossil fuel companies. And I urge the media and technology companies to stop advertising fossil fuels.”
In his speech, Guterres announced new data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) showing that there is an 80% chance that the planet will warm 1.5°C above pre-industrial times in at least one of the next five calendar years. The past 12 months have already exceeded this level, with a global average temperature 1.63°C above the pre-industrial average from June 2023 to May this year, after a series of months of record heat, according to the Copernicus monitoring system of European Union.
In the 2015 Paris climate pact, governments agreed to limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5°C to avoid serial heat waves, floods and droughts. While a single year beyond this limit does not mean the goal has been missed, scientists widely predict that will happen in the coming decades.
