The mayor maintains that “it is something essential for people who live on the coast throughout the year”
For yet another year, the Puerto de Mazarrón health center is left without a 24-hour emergency service. This decision, adopted by the Ministry of Health a few weeks ago, yesterday led both neighbors and political leaders to stage a demonstration at the gates of the aforementioned clinic to demand that the regional government continue to provide this service 365 days.
The mayor, Gaspar Miras, told this newspaper that the service will be cut off today. “The 24-hour emergency service at the Port health center ends this Sunday, and that is why we ask for another year that the service continues,” he said. The councilor held a meeting last Thursday with those responsible for the Ministry of Health to address this issue, but the repeated requests of the Consistory were not accepted by the Community. «We went to transfer to the counselor Juan José Pedreño the clamor of the people. It is a historical demand that the neighbors have been requesting for many years, “he said.
More than in the register
Today is the last day of the service; more than 13,000 inhabitants will have to go to the town or to Cartagena to be attended
According to the mayor, there are more residents in the Port of Mazarrón than registered citizens. «Many retired people decide to spend their last days in their second homes. The Port has about 13,000 registered inhabitants, but in reality there are many more citizens who live in this area. In fact, that number is multiplied by ten when the heat arrives, ”says the local government.
For the political formations of the Corporation, 24-hour emergencies throughout the year are something “essential” and “necessary” for citizens. Gaspar Miras maintained that “the service is saturated almost every weekend, and it is necessary for the residents who live on the coast to have access to decent healthcare. It is something fundamental for the people who live all year round in this coastal area, from Bolnuevo to La Azohía. The closest hospital of reference is in Cartagena and the health center of the town does not give itself for so many people ».
Opposition councilors were also at the rally. From the ranks of the Popular Party they admitted that “it is necessary for the population of the Port to have access to this essential service, although this is established depending on the number of registered residents in the area,” Alicia Jiménez explained.
