The legend of the Chupacabra terrified Mexican society in the 1990s, after some people from rural communities began claiming sightings of the strange creature.
Little by little, the story of an animal unknown to science that sucked the blood of farm and domestic animals began to spread in different parts of Latin America, creating mass hysteria.
According to the myth, the fearsome monster entered Mexico through the northern border of the country, passing through the state of Sonora.
Origin of the legend
The legend of the Chupacabra began in 1995, with the first appearance of this beast in the community of Canóvanas, located in eastern Puerto Rico.
Madeleyn Tolentino was the first person to claim that she saw the Chupacabra cross through the window. She described him as looking like an alien.
After that, the authorities received around 200 reports from citizens, who claimed to have seen this strange being.
Along with the sightings, dead animals began to appear with perforations in their necks, through which they supposedly sucked blood without touching the body’s organs.
But the legend of the Chupacabra grew with the stories of people who described it as a biperus animal (that walks on two legs), with a height of 120 to 150 centimeters, with spines on its back, large eyes, claws and fangs.
The legend of the Chupacabra spread to other countries, as it migrates from one place to another. Consequently, inhabitants of Mexico, the United States, Chile and even China reported sightings of this being.
