A glance at the map of US military bases in Asia is enough to confirm that China is under siege. That explains why your military budget has skyrocketed. But not to increase the number of its troops, which has been shrinking, but to improve its war technology. Fighters like the J-20, hypersonic missiles, and its first aircraft carriers have come out of that effort.
“After the ‘century of humiliation,’ China wants to regain its rightful place. It has ceased to be a technological imitator to innovate”, says Jesús A. Nuñez, co-director of the IECAH. But he adds that it is still far from catching up with US technology. Of course, Afghanistan has shown that Washington “has lost credibility as the guarantor of security”, which is why the Taiwanese fear a possible Chinese invasion. “China is advancing a lot in the space field, because there it could destroy many enemy capabilities,” says Nuñez.
Russia is falling further and further behind, but it has a far superior nuclear arsenal. “There was a lot of talk about hybrid warfare, but in the end we have seen that the conventional one continues to matter,” explains Nuñez, who sees the West adopting a strategy “so that Putin gets bogged down in Ukraine and prevent it from expanding further.”
Although the analyst unmitigatedly condemns the invasion, he also denounces the double yardstick of the West: “We criticize Russia for denouncing the expansion of NATO, but what would the United States do if Putin reached a security agreement with Mexico?”
