Among other things, the accounts contained false profiles of Uighurs about the happy life in Xinjiang Province.
American messaging service Twitter has closed thousands of accounts linked to the Chinese state in an attempt to create an image of a happy Uighur minority, says the British newspaper The Guardian.
There are a total of 2,160 accounts closed, the magazine says. The Australian incubator ASPI had examined their contents and described the whole as an “embarrassing” clumsy propaganda operation.
With fake accounts attempts were made to spread the message that life in China’s western province of Xinjiang is open and allegations of human rights abuses are not true. The typical hashtag has been #StopXinjiangRumours.
In China, Twitter is banned. However, according to The Guardian, government agencies or people supporting the government are campaigning abroad.
Xinjiang the life of the Uyghur population in the province has become even more difficult for the current Chinese leader Xi Jinpingin during the reign. As many as a million Uighurs have been sent to so-called retraining camps.
China denies the abuses and condemns the absence of the outside world.
